types of network

A computer network means a group of 'networked' coputer i.e., computer that are  linked by means of a communication system. A network can mean a small group of linked computers to a few hundred computers of different types (e.g., PCs, minis, mainfraims etc.) spread around the world. Thus, networks vary in size, complexity  and geographical spread. Mostly, cpomputers are classified on the  basis of geographical spread and on this basis, there can be four types of network :

      (1) Local Area Networks(LANs)
      (2) Metropolitan Area Networks(MANs)
      (3) Wide Area Network(WANs)
      (4) Personal area Network(PAN)
         (1) Local Area Network(LANs):

 Small computer network that are confined to a localihed area (e.g.,an offiice, a bullding or known as Local Area Network (LANs). The key purpose of a LAN shearing. The hadware as well as software reources are shrard through LANs. For instance, LAN users can shear data, information,   programe,   printer,   hard-disks, modems, etc.
         In a typical LAN configuration, one computer is designated as file server. It stores all of the soft ware  the controls the network, as well as the software that can be sheared by the computers attached to the network. Computers connectad to the the file server are called works-tation. The work-station can be less powerful then the file server, they may have additional software on their hard drives. On most LANs, cables are used to connect the network interface cardes in each computer.
           (2) Metropolitan Area Network(MAN):

Metropolitan Area Network speard ovear a city. Fpr example, cable TV netqork are spared over a ciy , can be termed a metropolitan are networks. The purpose of a MAN is also the shearing of hardware resource among its users.
          (3) Wide Area Network(WAN):

 The network speard accros countries are known as (WAN) is a group of computers that are spread across several locations and connected together to look link one big LAN. The WANs link computers to facilitate fast and efficient exchange of information at lesser cost and higher speeds.
   Computer connected to a wide-are network are often connected through public networks,  such as the telephone system. Sometimes they can be connected through leased lines or satelllites. The largest WAN in existence is the Internet.
              (4) Personal Area Network(PAN):

 A personal area network (PAN) i the interconnection of information technology devices within the range of an individual person, typically within  a range of 10 meate.
                           For example, a person travling with a laptop, a personal digital assisant  (PDA), and a protable printer cloud interconnect them without having to plug any thing in, using some from of wireless technology such as Wifi. Typically, this kind of peronal area network cloud also be interconnected wihhoutr wires to the Internet or other networks. You can use PAN network to transfer file including email and calender appointments, digital photos and music etc from your protable device such a phone and tablets to PC and vice versa.

             Comparing these Network: When the term computer network was first use, any interconnections between computers. since that time, three subclases have emarged that are distinguished primarily by their geographical scoap.
           The first of these is the wide area network (WAN). This network spans a large area-possibly several continent. The second major type is the local area netork (LAN) and, as the name suggest, it is confined to relatively samll area such as a building or a group of buildings, for example a university  campus.A third type, is the metropolitan area network(MAN). The scope of this class of network lies between  LANs and WANs i.e., spanning a small city or  town. MAN basically uses LAN technology. Cable Television network are examples for analog MANs for telivision distribution. The MANs  we are interested in are digital and are interested to connect computers. Most of the discussion on LAn also hold for MANs, so we will not mention the latter explicitty.
     In naming these types of networks, the main distinguishing factor would appear to be the size of the area coverd.
